
Dr. Joy Lucas

Dr. Joy Lucas is originally from Wellston, Ohio. She completed her undergraduate degree at Ohio Dominican University. She then attended the University of Tennessee, where she received her doctorate of verterinary medicine in 1994. In 1995, she completed her internship at Metropolitan Veterinary Hospital in Akron, Ohio. Following her internship, Dr. Lucas worked at a small animal practice for six years in Albany, NY. In June of 2001 she purchased Upstate Animal Medical Center.
In addition to her passion for small animal medicine, Dr. Lucas has a strong interest in avian and exotic medicine. She also volunteers her time to care for sick and injured wildlife.
In honor of her late Great Dane "Zu," Dr. Lucas supports the Safe Pet Partnership Organization, which is a division of Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis services of Saratoga County.
In her spare time, Dr. Lucas enjoys many outdoor activities in the Adirondacks, like hiking with her two dogs, "Possum" and "Ouzz." Her other beloved critters include her two birds and four cats.
Dr. Gabriella Varcoe

Dr. Gabriella Varcoe is originally from Caracas, Venezuela and has resided in Florida, Michigan and New York. She completed her undergraduate degree at Siena College in Loudonville, NY and then attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, she next completed a clinical year at Michigan State University and was awarded her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2007.
Dr.Varcoe worked at a small animal practice in Latham, NY prior to joining Upstate Animal Medical Center in the Fall of 2010.
Dr. Varcoe has a special interest in canine rehabilitation and is certified as a CCRP (Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner) through the University of Tennessee. Other medical interests include geriatric medicine, non-surgical orthopedic medicine and alternative medicine.
In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family and Kittitian dog "Sugar". She also likes biking, running road races in preparation to run a future marathon, photography/videograpy and would someday like to volunteer doing Vets Without Borders around the world.
Dr. Scott Cherry

Upstate Animal Medical Center would like to announce the addition of Dr. Scott Cherry to our staff. Dr Cherry is a graduate of Cornell University Veterinary School and completed a surgical internship at a world-renowned specialty practice in Brisbane, Australia. After his internship Dr Cherry returned home to the Albany area to practice. He spent the last 10 years at Shaker Veterinary Hospital as their primary orthopedic surgeon before deciding to move to Upstate AMC.
He has years of experience with both soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. He is certified in both TPLO and lateral suture repair of cruciate ligament injuries. He has extensive experience with various fracture repair methods including plate, pin and wire, and external fixation. He is a strong proponent of postoperative rehabilitation and is very happy to have access to Upstate AMC’s excellent rehabilitation center.
Dr. Cherry and his wife Ruth have a dog-named “Mimsey”, a parrot “Oscar” and a cat named "Hydrox". In his spare time, Dr. Cherry enjoys skiing, scuba diving and Autocross competition.
